Arrived just after low tide with Jim who was venturing out here for the
first time. The wind was blowing cross-on from the right at around 20 mph.
The waves weren't too bad on the inside 2-4 foot, with reasonable gaps
between waves, but further out, the waves were big, nasty with lots of
white water. Went with the Syncro 115 and 6.3m Target, and was really
enjoying myself in the smaller stuff. Got trashed a few times, but not
badly. Tended to sail out just before the big stuff in a lull between sets
and tack/gybe in the flats between waves and wait for the next wave to ride
back into the beach. This was working fine, and I had a number of really
enjoyable wave rides where it felt like I was really slashing up the wave -
even if it probably looked pants from the beach! Jim seemed to be enjoying
himself as well. However, as the tide reached about mid-tide, the currents
started to get quite strong and there was a nasty rip/undertow that nearly
caught us both out - puts things into perspective. Jim called it a day
after this, and I stayed out for another 40 mins or so, but the waves were
getting increasingly dumpy, and the current wasn't helping, although it did
ease off a little. All in all a pretty decent session, although the
currents needed to be watched - the worst ones since I started sailing
there anyway (not really noticed them before).
